Just kidding! Actually, Visual Thesaurus
is a pretty cool site. Obviously, when most people are crafting reports, articles, and the like, they rely on online dictionaries and thesaurus, such as dictionary.com
. To be honest, once you try Visual Thesaurus, you'll want to keep on using it!
I tried it this morning during my Journalism class. At the computer lab in my school library, Benjamin Zimmer
, the creator of Visual Thesaurus
, gave a demonstration of his website. He gave us postcard-size advertisements of the site. On one side had a huge label with a sentence from a somewhat recent New York Times
article. In that sentence, a word or two were underlined. My class was then told to search for a better word on Visual Thesaurus
using the underlined word(s). Then, some people told Mr. Zimmer of their findings. I don't feel like getting into that, though! XD;
Then, Mr. Zimmer showed us a powerpoint of why we shouldn't abuse thesauruses. He showed us a quote of someone who admittedly abused the thesaurus in his younger days. Mr. Zimmer tried to see if anyone could figure out who said the quote. One guy in my class thought it was George W. Bush. Guess what? He was right! Stupid!
Near the end of my Journalism class, Mr. Zimmer told us that his wife graduated from my school in 1988! He also said that she is Filipino! That's pretty cool, but honestly, I can't picture a Jewish Filipino. But then again, I wanted to be one a year ago! XD
I think someone should get me a subscription to Visual Thesaurus.
The promo that I got from Mr. Zimmer runs out on January 23rd!( Screencaps!Collapse )
